SOMETHING FOR THE ARCHIVES
April 25th 1998 ATHERINGTON By Ann Gower
A crowded presentation party was held in Atherington Village Hall in recognition and appreciation of the many years Postal Service given by Mrs Freda Loosemore and Mrs May Woolacott, on the occasion of their retirement.
Mr Chris Geraghty, Area Manager for North Devon, presented them both with bouquets, certificates and gifts on behalf of the Post Office, preceded by a short address of thanks for their long service. This was followed by a few words by Mr Jack Birkill on behalf of the villagers, who acknowledged their roles as having been far more than Post Office ladies to us all. Then two appropriately chosen red and white bouquets were presented. An engraved Rose Bowl was given to Mrs Loosemore together with a cheque from her round. (A second gathering was held the following afternoon at the home of Mrs Julie Tucker, for those unable to attend from her round, to present her with an engraved Fruit Bowl).
Abbey and Ben Harper each gave a posie and a card from the village playgroup and Mrs Loosemore’s great grand-daughter, Lauren, gave her a basket floral arrangement. Both ladies gave a few words of thanks in response and a large decorated cake was cut and shared around.
Everyone then tucked into a hearty buffet supper, contributed by all those present, while Mr Alan Sawyer played a delightful medley of nostalgic songs. Mr Richard Lethbridge, a local archivist and cameraman was there to record the evening on video. A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all.
After a successful Lent course this year, it was decided to continue to meet on the second Monday of each month for an informal time of Praise and Prayer.
Last month we had a good time together with Christians from several denominations represented. This month we are meeting in the home of David and Carol Brown at 2 Church Meadow, High Bickington on Monday June 8th at 7.30pm.

September 17th 1937 - GIFT TO HEADMASTER - High Bickington Farewell
Mr. R. W. Pitman, who has been headmaster of High Bickington School for over eight years, and who is shortly leaving to take up a post in connection with the Government’s physical training campaign, was last night the recipient of a number of presentations at a largely-attended function at High Bickington Church Hall.
Mr. Pitman has been prominently identified with High Bickington Association Football Club, of which he has been secretary and a playing member, the North Devon League and Holman and Braunton Challenge Cups. He has been organist at the Parish Church for almost two years, and has been a member of Barnstaple Operatic Society and Barnstaple Musical Festive Society.
He was also the secretary of the High Bickington British Legion and a member of Raleigh Cricket Club, Barnstaple. The gifts were a dressing set and a cheque presented by the Rev. L. W. Wansborough, former Rector of the Parish, on behalf of the school managers and parents; a pair of cuff links presented by Lieut. Colonel P. A. Maxwell on behalf of High Bickington Athletic Club; and a leather suitcase, presented by Master John Snell, senior scholar, on behalf of the pupils of the school.
The British Legion had previously presented Mr. Pitman with a silver cigarette case.
12th January 1939 - FASHIONABLE HIGH BICKINGTON WEDDING
Regimental Band in Church - Capt. M. A. Bryant and Miss P. A. Aitken
Bridegroom and best man wore the uniform of the Gloucester Regiment, and the wedding cake was decorated with a representation of the Regimental badge, at the full-dress military wedding, which took place at High Bickington on Saturday, of Capt. Maurice Alan Bryant, of the Gloucester Regiment, only son of Mrs. Bryant, of Wren Cottage, Bideford, and the late Col. Alan Bryant, and Miss Pamela Joan Aitken, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Aitken, of Nethergrove, High Bickington.
Many friends attended the ceremony, which took place in St. Mary’s Church, High Bickington, the Revs. G. A. B. Jones (Rector) and C. V. Wansborough (a former Rector of the Parish) officiating.
The bride, given away by her father, was attended by two matrons of honour. Mrs. A. G. Smith (sister of the bride) and Mrs C. Reyerspach, and three bridesmaids, Miss M. Aitken (bride’s sister), Miss N. Sisson (bride’s cousin) and Miss J. Pollock. Capt. R. Butler was best man.
The bride carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley, and the matrons of honour and bridesmaids bouquets of scarlet carnations. The service was choral. Members of the Gloucestershire Regimental Band accompanied the hymns. There was a reception at Nethergrove. The honeymoon is being spent in Switzerland.
I have been asked by Margaret Squire to alert people about these destructive grubs. They are white maggots found 2 - 3 inches below the soil and will eat all the roots of any plants available. Look particularly at plants brought in from Garden Centres etc. and make sure any maggots are destroyed before re-planting.
It was good to see the Lengthmen at work in Atherington. They have done a good job and we hope this will be repeated regularly.
Our thanks to Mrs Martin who led the May Family Service. The theme tied in with the Sunday School theme for the month “Journeys in Faith”.
The Household Sale on 15 May raised £193.65 for Chapel funds. Very many thanks to all who provided the goods for sale, helped set out and price the items and then sold them.
Mrs Sylvia Pidler arranged the annual walk on 16 May on the Tarka Trail this year. Walking from Petrockstowe Old Station towards Meeth a distance of 3½ miles some seasoned walkers managed the 7 miles, but wherever the turn back point, we all enjoyed it - thank you Sylvia. Some went on the Torrington Common after for a Hocking’s ice cream and saw what must have been their youngest customer ever - 1 DAY old.
Both Childrens’ Clubs have made the most of the recent fine weather and visited the Play Area and a tractor and trailer ride from Fishleigh to the river Taw for a paddle, this was enjoyed greatly.
Our Sunday School Anniversary Services will take place on June 28th at 11am and 6.30pm. Come and support the young people.
The July 5th Family Service will be led by Mrs Marion Ridd-Jones and be followed by a family meal. All are welcome. Numbers for the meal to Hazel on 560265 by June 28th.
The Parish Council Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday, 24th June at 8pm.
The meeting will be preceded by a visit from Barbara Venn, Housing Advice Manager, North Devon District Council.
It is hoped that as many parishioners as possible will be able to attend this meeting.

The above gradings were presented by the President of the British Judo Council - Sensei Robin Otani - when he visited the Club on 14th May 1998.
We travelled to Harracott in May where fourteen of our members joined Harracott W.I. for the Resolution meeting. Three members fro Atherington W.I. were also present.
President Hilary Thomas welcomed us and introduced V.C.O. Sheila Hales who in turn introduced a lady who is going to become a V.C.O., Elma Blackwell. They both spoke to us about the Resolutions and a unanimous vote for Young Carers was obtained. There were competitions for pottery which was won by High Bickington member Jean Checksfield with Hilary Thomas of Harracott second and Sally Morris, also of Harracott, third. Ella Gooding won the raffle, Elma Blackwell was second, Margaret Squire was third and Jean Checksfield.
Our President, Eva Burke, thanked Harracott for entertaining us and for the nice refreshments. At our business meeting, Eva said she was very pleased so many of our members had attended what had been a very nice evening. We were reminded of the Barbecue at Eva Burke’s house on 9th July at 7pm, £3-50, the Church Fete on Saturday, 11th July - we are running the cake stall (any cakes welcome on the day please) and the North Devon Show on 5th August.
Eva also thanked our member Chris England for having the courage to write about the state of the village. We should all be doing our bit to help keep the village clean and tidy. Stella Burrows of Neighbourhood Watch wanted to ask everyone to be vigilant as several garages have been broken into at Barton Meadow.
Finally, I would like to apologise to one disgruntled member who pointed out that she won the Knobbly Knees Competition last month. Sorry to the other ladies who have now relegated to second and third places!
Our next meeting is on June 3rd.
There were just a few of us at our May meeting. We discussed the Church Fete and the North Devon Show. We decided the venue for our Summer Outing:
Monday July 13th - the venue is BRIXHAM and a garden centre on the way.
Please come and join us - we should have a great day. Contact Miss N Cole or Mrs R Munson as soon as possible please.
Our next meeting is on Monday, 8th June at 2pm at Miss Cole’s house.

On World Book Day, 23rd April, we dressed up as our favourite character from a book. I was Cinderella and Mrs Strickland
came dressed as Noddy. The teachers took photographs of us. When I saw Mr Norton he was The Bad Tempered Ladybird.
Louise Lambourne was Snow White, Brittany was Wendy from Peter Pan and Matthew Cummings was Spiderman.
Louise Peck.
On World Book Day we came to school dressed up as our favourite characters out of a book. I came to school dressed up as
Rumpelstiltskin. I wore my mum's red and black striped stockings, a black skirt and a very long black shirt. My best friend
Kim, came as Mistress Mary Quite Contrary. Some of the other children came as Cinderella, Puss in Boots and Esmeralda.
Krista Walker.
World Book Day is when you hear,
“Happy Birthday Will Shakespeare!”
People dressed up, but not as you think,
There went even some clad in mink.
Characters there were galore,
And some of those came from the law!
I was Katy and I thought it cool
When someone dressed up as a wall!
Mrs Abbott and Mr Norton were in costume,
Mr Norton the Angry Ladybird I assume!
We each had a voucher to spend as we liked,
But we weren't allowed to buy a bike!
Photos were taken and we thought to see them soon,
But the film was ruined so we weren’t over the moon!
This poem has now come to an end,
And I hope you will still be my friend!
Amalia Watson.
Football at Chulmleigh
I woke up at 6 o’clock I was so excited and just for once I couldn’t wait to get to school. Today (8th May) was the day
we played football at Chulmleigh. Mark Lambourne was the Man of the Match. Sadly we didn’t win but we’re getting closer.
Last year we were 4th and this year we were 3rd. Maybe next year when I am in Year 6 we will be the champions.
Ricky Galbally.
Netball - Eleanor Lunn
The Netball tournament was today,
At the end we shouted, “Hip hooray!”
We won the first game, so we went for the cup,
But as we progressed we didn’t go up!
The rest of the games we didn’t win,
But we still tried to put on a big grin.
We scored two goals in our first game,
But not in the rest, there's no-one to blame.
Chulmleigh won the cup given for netball,
The plate was won by Witheridge - a close call!
Coming home we thought of last year, and of when
We came joint first, but alas not again!
SATs
SATS are an Monday
The teachers have been great;
Helping us revise and practise,
So we don’t have to stay up late. (Worrying!)
Yes I know I worry, far to much,
Or so everybody says;
But if I do my best
I know I’ll do well all the way (I hope!)
Maths is first up
Division and multiplication;
And of course we could forget
Science is next
Plants and electricity;
I do hope I do fairly well
And certainly not miserably (Fingers crossed!)
Oh no, it’s English,
Still I'll do my best,
I’ll revise from my folder
After all what’s a test? (Just something that ruins a week!)

Mrs. Hook leaves
Mrs Hook has left the school and now we need another Mealtime Assistant. She would look after us in the playground, help the little ones cut up their food, sometimes help serve the dinners and always pour the water. After we have finished our lunch we go out into the playground to play. Now Mrs Stevens has to cook the lunch and give it to the dinner people and when they have finished their school lunch she leaves the kitchen and looks after us in the playground.
I think we could do with a new Mealtime Assistant.
Please - could it be YOU?
Samantha Short
On Wednesday, 15th April, we met at High Bickington village hall for an evening with "Hanging Baskets". Our guest speaker was Nick Oliver from St. John's Garden Centre in Barnstaple. It was hard to believe that we were looking forward to planting our own baskets with the hail hammering against the window whilst he spoke to us. Never the less, the display of trailing plants and other flowers suitable for containers and baskets was varied and unusual. He gave us many tips on how to keep our displays colourful throughout the whole of summer through to early autumn (so our properties should look the picture this year!)
He explained how St John's grows a succession of plants for us to buy and told us that they spend an astronomical amount (£3,000) on bedding plants for retail (my husband can now stop moaning about the amount I spend on flowers and plants!)
With summer looming, our next meeting will be the first garden visit of the year with a trip to Withleigh Farm, Withleigh village, on 20th May. Directions can be obtained from the Secretary, Sharne Worrall.
