Three members of High Bickington Judo Club, Kerry Hopkins, Daley Shrubsole and Kim Short entered the British Judo Council Devon Area Competition and won 2 Gold Trophies, 1 Bronze medal and 1 Certificate award. Well done.
Lynda Hancock, 2nd Dan and the British Judo Council’s Womens National Champion for the third year running has joined High Bickington Judo Club as Instructor to help Bob who finds it very difficult with so many members, to coach the higher grades with advance Judo techniques.
When God had made the earth and sky,
The flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals
And all the birds and bees,
And when His work was finished
No one was quite the same.
He said, “I’ll walk this earth of mine
And give each one a name.”
And so He travelled land and sea
And everywhere He went
A little creature followed Him
Until its strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth
And in the sky and sea,
This little creature said, “Dear Lord,
There’s not one left for me.”
The father smiled and softly said
“I’ve left you to the end.
I’ve turned my own name back to front
And called you Dog, my friend.”

We hope everyone has had a successful holiday time during July and August. The stall went well at the North Devon Show, thank you to all who helped and supported it.
When you read this the Flower Festival will be over, we hope you enjoyed it.
Our next meeting will be on Monday, September 13th at the Parsonage at 2.00pm.
ST MARY’S, ATHERINGTON - No. 82. - November 1971 - Price 1p.
PARISH NEWS
Rector: - Rev. A. J. Plummer, M.A.
Churchwardens: - H. Shapland, Esq. & W. H. Seatherton, Esq.
Organist: - Mrs. Seage.
Assistant Organist: - Mrs. Maynard.
Hon. Sec.: - Mrs. Creese.
Hon. Treasurer: - Mrs. Rowe.
RENTOKIL have come and gone and the Church should be free of woodworm or death-watch beetle for some years. But it caused chaos at the time and one began to wonder if the Church would ever be straight again. At this point the Rector went away (!), leaving everybody else to cope - and wonderfully well did they do so. The amount of work got through was little short of a miracle and, apart from the slight smell which is sure to hang about for some time, you wouldn’t know the Church had been turned upside down a few weeks ago. The Rector is dependent on what he has been told about help given, and, at the risk of leaving out somebody who gave help - which, of course, would not be intentional - he would like to thank the following:
Mr. & Mrs. Seage who spent four whole days in the church, aided by Christopher, even bringing up their mid-day meal.
Mrs. Creese carried on the Rentokil treatment on the woodwork not specified in the estimate.
Mrs. Felton cleaned the brass, silver and all the pictures.
Mrs. Brayley, Mrs. Seatherton and Mrs. Woollacott scrubbed vigorously on their hands and knees and Mrs. Lee joined them when she could.
Mrs. Woollacott brought over hot water in a churn for the “scrubbers” and also de-rusted some of the iron rods.
Mr. Seage worked terrifically hard, cleaning all the walls, windows and making good the defective plaster.
A good deal of this information has come from a source who naturally has not mentioned itself, but I am quite sure that where there is work to be done, Mr. and Mrs. Hutchins took their full part in it.
To one and all the whole parish owes a debt of gratitude and the public spirit displayed was wholly admirable. I’m afraid their only reward - but a real one - is that the church now looks most beautiful.
FROM ALL ACCOUNTS THE HARVEST FESTIVAL went off very well with a good number attending the Sunday Morning Service and the
Monday Service and Supper afterwards, though there were not so many present on the Sunday evening. Many thanks to all our
visiting preachers, to those who kindly decorated the Church or provided the Harvest Supper and to Mr. Brayley for taking
the fruit and vegetables to the Hospital afterwards.
NEMESIS beset the Rector for leaving you to do all the hard work. His car broke down in a small village in France about 30
miles from Le Havre and he had the indignity of being towed some four miles to a garage (on the wrong side of the road!) in
the dark. Fortunately he’d come to grief outside a small Transport Café where his party was welcomed by all as a sort of
joke. The food was excellent but a veil shall be drawn over the accommodation for the night. Next day by Taxi, train and
boat the party eventually arrived in Southampton in a thick fog. The car is still in France and has got to be fetched by
someone. All this will teach the Rector not to be away for the Harvest again!
MR. DOWN kindly fetched him for the service on Sunday, October 10th. And he is now negotiating borrowing a car temporarily.
He hears Mr. Shapland has had an operation and hopes to visit him as soon as possible.
THE COFFEE EVENING and FILMS, provided by Miss Jennifer Gooding, drew quite a good number on September 9th. And we would like to thank her and those who provided Refreshments or ran the Bring-and-Buy Stall. Quoting from memory, about £16 profit was made on this venture.
WE HAD HOPED IN THIS NUMBER to say something about the amazing procession we witnessed in Lugano in connection with the local Wine Harvest Festival, but this must be held over until our next.
Dear Friends to be,
I’m grateful for this opportunity to introduce myself to the two parishes of St. Mary’s - Atherington & High Bickington.
In our Church of England ‘set-up/parochial system’ Atherington & High Bickington, as many of you probably know, are part of
the Two Rivers Team. The other Team Parishes being:
Alverdiscott, Newton Tracey, Huntshaw, Horwood, Yarnscombe, Beaford,Roborough, St. Giles and Tawstock.
On the 10th September we shall have a Service of Institution/Induction for our new Team Rector, Reverend Arthur Parsons, at St. Peter's, Tawstock at 19.30. Arthur, his wife Margaret, and younger daughter Jo. moved in to Newton Tracey rectory in the middle of August. Arthur will be looking after the Newton Tracey group of parishes.
Since the Reverend Hugh Pollock retired at the end of last year (he is still remaining an honorary consultant in our Team) the Reverend Stephen Thorp has been looking after the two St. Mary’s as well as his own Parishes of Beaford, Roborough and St. Giles. So from 10th September I will be exchanging my responsibility for the Newton Tracey group and taking over from Stephen in the two St. Mary's.
I am very much looking forward to working with the P.C.C.s and Church-families of these two parishes and getting to know as
many of you all as possible. I am Planning to spend a day in each parish each week - starting at 09.00 in Church with a
short time of prayer and finishing early evening. Tuesdays in Atherington and Fridays in High Bickington.
I will try to keep to this plan (any changes will be shown in Ramblings) and look forward to meeting many of you over the
next few months.
Yours in His Service, John Carvosso
If an officer writes a letter, it is too long;
If she sends a postcard, it is too short,
If she issues a bulletin, she’s a spendthrift
If she attends a committee meeting, she’s butting in.
If she stays away, she’s a shirker,
If she offers a suggestion, she’s a know it all
If she says nothing, she’s useless.
If the attendance at a meeting is slack,
She should have called up members,
If she calls them, she’s a pest.
If she asks a member for her subscription,
She is insulting.
If she doesn’t, she’s lazy,
If the meeting is a great success, the committee gets the praise.
If it’s a failure, the secretary is to blame,
If she asks for advice, she’s incompetent,
If she does not, she is swollen headed.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust,
If others won’t do it, the secretary must!
I expect you have all noticed that the church clock has not been striking and is in great need of repair, the cost of which is £620. The clock is used by the village people every day and also by local people passing through. It has been decided that the money made from the Harvest Supper and produce will go towards the clock repairs. If there is anyone who cannot come to our supper and would like to give a donation, we would be very grateful.
Shirley Shapland
Thank you to everyone who helped to make the end of term so special.
It was lovely to see so many past pupils and their parents; former staff and governors; colleagues for the Academic Council plus two friends who trained with me 40 years ago.
The concert given by the children was wonderful, and in the coming months (and years) I shall take much pleasure in re-reading the many cards and poems and in looking through the photograph album and “memories” books.
The beautiful painting of my grandchildren will have pride of place in our new home and I look forward to spending the gardening vouchers.
Your kindness and support over the past 14 years has been much appreciated. Thank you all.
Margaret Abbott
No meeting in August - but birthday plants were presented to Jennifer Gooding, Pearl Arscott, Jean Lynch and Eileen
Chambers.
Several members were winners at Umberleigh Show - well done!
A big ‘thank you’ to all members who have NCH Collecting Boxes - the grand total this year was £130-52. At the September meeting there will be a draw for the Denman Bursary weekend next year.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 14th at Umberleigh Hall at 7.30pm when Ivan Huxtable will tell us all there is to know about ‘Dahlias’. Visitors very welcome.
Using a heavy, eight oxen plough, the Saxons made their fields long to reduce the number of turns required. The old English furlong, one eighth of a mile, is derived from “furrow-long”.
We welcome Rev Jack Matkin and family, hoping their year long stay in North Devon will be pleasant. Rev Matkin will lead his first service at High Bickington on Sunday, September 12th at 11am. Sunday School re-starts on this day after the summer break. All children are welcome, 10.40 am to 12.00 noon.
Many thanks to Carole and Graham Sanders who provided barbecues and cooked food for the family picnic at Landacre. A group of thirty enjoyed a sunny afternoon beside the river. Several of the group cooled off in the water, and for a few a shock awaited as they awoke from their afternoon nap! (keep those socks on, Robert and David).
The Children’s Clubs re-start on Tuesday, September 14th:
5 - 7 years - 5.15 - 6.15 pm
8 -11 years - 6.30 - 7.30 pm
The Jumble Sale raised £144 for property funds. Thank you to all who helped and supported the event.
We have just completed our social services inspection and have come through it very well. Having said goodbye to Carole, Elizabeth is settling in well. This term we have had a sponsored walk and have been on our trip. This year we went to the Big Sheep and despite the rain a good time was had by all.
We say goodbye to four children as they move on to primary school, Amber Buckpitt, Joshua Crook, Georgina Phillips and Peter Underhill. The next term will be a busy one with preparations for Christmas, I have also just found out we have the Ofsted inspectors in sometime during the term.
Thank you to Elaine Jones for all her hard work, she is finishing as treasurer but passing the job over to the capable hands of Jacqui Johnson. Playgroup runs on Monday Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 9.30 -12.00. As of September, due to the closure of the Toddler Group, we will be holding a session from 11.00 - 12.00 on a Thursday for toddlers as part of the normal group session. The cost for this will be £1.50 per child. Children will be have to be registered, this can be done by contacting Lesley Beer or calling into Playgroup.
The September term starts on Monday, 13th September.
Thank you to everyone who turned out for the fete, the weather was very kind to us. We raised £360 for the playing field. A big thank you to those who donated to the stalls and especially those who donated their time - it is appreciated.
The Fete, in regard to some comments, was smaller this year so we could concentrate on having a big event next year as part of the village millennium celebrations. However unless we have people come forward to help man the stalls etc. we are limited in what we can do. We are a community and I would like to see a bit more community participation. If everybody decided not to do anything we would not have these events - they do not happen by magic!!!
The lottery bid for the multi-use court has gone in and we now await the verdict, whatever happens I would like to say a big thank you to David Blower who has written up and submitted the bid, it has really taken up a lot of his already stretched time and a thank you to Penny for bearing with us as the bid has been formulated.
The next event on the playing field is the fireworks on Saturday, 6th November.
Anyone wishing to get involved with the playing field can contact Lesley Beer
