Re: Upcott Farm From: Colin Sansom

message - 09/11/2002 I spent many summer holidays in High Bickington as a child. We stayed on a farm called Upcott Farm, Burrington,High Bickington, North Devon. The owners names were the Elworthy's . Are they still living there. I have many fond memories.I do miss this place and I hope that one day I will be able to return from New Zealand where I am living now and revisit your beautiful village. I have photos of the times I spent down during my visits there. My Father was evacuated during world war two as a child to this same farm, hence how we know the owners- Fred and Eva.I believe that the farm has been passed down to the son Ken and his wife Pam Elworthy. They have four sons.My last visit to Devon would have been in 1985, so it is a long time since I have been back. I hope you find this story of interest.

We are always interested to hear of peoples memories of the village and surrounding area and your story is no exception. We'd love to see your photo's of the area, are they online perhaps? (We'd like to include a link on site) Alternatively we'd love to receive them by email if you have any you think may be of interest?
Can confirm that the Elworthy's are still at Upcott Farm, they suffered like many in the area from the Foot and Mouth outbreak last year.

Re: Gravestone From: Jean Macrae

message - 11/11/2002 Hello High Bickington
My mothers ashes are buried in St Marys churchyard and she has a Flower urn on the top of 492 Douglas Smith. He was her brother. I cannot find her name on your site.
Hope you can help.
Regards, Jean.

Jean, will look into this and let you know shortly.

Jean, You are quite correct, your mothers stone was present, must have overlooked it when cataloguing the graves.

Re: Village Appraisal From: Shaun Carter

message - 13/11/2002 Hi there,
I work at County Hall and have been involved in many of the parish appraisals that have occurred since 1996. We have just added your 1992 appraisal to our website - this is the address if you want to look or add a link: http://www.devon.gov.uk/dris/commstat/capp_mnu.html
I was also involved with a more recent Appraisal (1999-2000?)upto the questionnaire stage but never got to see the final report. If this is available I would like to add it our page if possible. Electronically (Word Document) would be ideal but a paper copy would do (We would scan it).
Thank you, Shaun Carter

Shaun, thanks for the link. Unfortunately haven't got a copy of the appraisal results to hand at this time but will look into it. Will send you a copy.

An out of the ordinary request from outside our area. Can anyone share their experiences with the 'Careman'?
