Re: Nurse Stear. From: Webmaster.

Karen Stear also contacted us to say that Nurse was her Great Aunt!
Any more members of the Stear clan out there?

Re: Nurse Stear. From: Kathy Jay. 16/03/2002.

Although not a blood relative, when I was a little girl I felt as close to Nurse as any other family member. I grew up living next door to Nurse and was constantly running in and out of her house! She was much loved and is greatly missed by everyone in our family. I shall endevour to find some photographs of her to forward to you.

Re: Nurse Stear. From: Chris Burgoyne - 2/09/2004.

I am the nephew of Marion Stear, known in High Bickington as "Nurse" and the subject of her own page on this web site. I visited her on a number of occasions in High Bickington.

For many years she lived with her Aunt, Mabel Evans, who kept house for her in High Bickington.
I am compiling our own family history, and although I have a few photos of Marion I have very few of Mabel, who must have died about 1960, and certainly no good ones.

If anyone has any good photos of either Marion or Mabel that they could scan and send to me, or could loan them to me so that I could copy them, I would be very grateful.

I can be contacted by email at cjb@eng.cam.ac.uk

Thank you in anticipation!
Chris Burgoyne

Subject: Cooper Family From: Maureen Bellette in Australia

message - Thrilled to find this site. My Maiden name is Cooper and my great grandfather William Cooper, (and at least 4 generations of Coopers before him), were born and lived at High Bickington. William was born in 1826, son of George Cooper and Elizabeth Sargent, (little Torrington). Other names connected with earlier generations were Heale, King and Cole.
William came to Tasmania about 1850 and he has many descendants today all over Australia.
Great to be able to see pictures, hope to be able to see it in person one day.

Re: Cooper Family. From: Jackie Whitton

message - 23/03/2006 - Hi,
I have ancestors who lived in High Bickington. They were the families of Cole, Denford and Harris.
I think the Cole family and then the Harris family owned Beara Farm and the Denford family owned South Heale Farm and North Heale Farm.
If any of this rings any bells, please let me know.

Subject: Turner Family. From: Mary Turner

message - 06/02/01 Loved your book. So glad I stumbled across you at our local publishers. My mother in law was Beatrice Lucy Beer, grandaughter of John Beer, Blacksmith. Her mother Annie Louisa Beer had Beattie out of wedlock - she emigrated to Canada/USA when daughter was very young. Unable to find any trace of her to date. Understand why she went, small village and it was not acceptable in those days. Later Beattie married Bill Turner from Burrington, they lived at Wards Cottage and he worked for Mr Aitken of Nethergrove. So many wonderful stories - she has gone now but her stories of your village and her sons, John Wallace (Wall) and William Ronald (Ron), still buzz around in my head (both in Midwife's Diary). Hope to see later burials on your web site. It really is superb, rich in history and local knowledge. Keep it up, I'll be back, Mary

Re: Turner Family. From: Webmaster.

Mary, we'd be facinated to hear of the stories Beattie told you if you fancy putting them in print on this site? We'd love to share your memories as well as any photographs you may care to share?

Re: Turner Family. From: Webmaster.

Mary, I have some Turner connections that may be of interest to you?
I have a birth certificate for Susanna Turner, born 9th October 1873 to William and Jane Turner (nee Stediford), at New Cottage in Chittlehampton. Click here to view it.
I have a marriage certificate for Edward Short who married Susan Turner at Atherington on 2nd July 1893 in the presence of Susanna Short and Robert Short. I suspect but can't confirm that Susanna Short is actually the same Susanna Turner mentioned above and suspect Susan to be her sister or cousin, I can see no reason why my mother would have both certificates if they weren't connected? Click here to view it.
The final connection to my family, (Parker), is a marriage certificate for my Grandparents, Elias John Parker who married Annie Short on 5th February 1919 at High Bickington. The certificate shows Elias Parker as the grooms father and Edward Short as the brides, the same Edward Short as mentioned above. Click here to view it.

Re: Turner Family. From: John Sergeant. 11/01/2009

My Gt Grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Turner, was born in HB in 1856, married Henry Brace Parkhouse in Tawstock in 1878 and moved north with him to Sheffield and Scunthorpe where Henry was one of the founders of the steel industry.

The family story (disinformation) was that Elizabeth was “the daughter of a wealthy mining family”. That’s understandable, Henry was a town councillor and church benefactor. I might burnish my social credentials too.

In fact, I believe Elizabeth Ann was born out of wedlock, in 1856, to Mary Turner daughter of William Turner (1792-) and Elizabeth Ackland (1784-) ,who married in HB in 1815.

A further genealogical hiccup is that William Turner (1792) was probably born out of wedlock too, to another Mary Turner.

So explain yourself HB...why was there more of it going on down there than anywhere else in my tree?

If it helps any other frustrated TURNER researchers, I have a spreadsheet of all Turners in HB 1726 – 1861 derived from cesuses 41/51/61, IGI and your excellent burial records.

Re: Turner Family. From: Webmaster.

John,
Many thanks for the input. Would love to have a copy of your research.
I think you will find that births out of wedlock were more common than you think in the 19th and early 20th centuries due to the lack of family planning that we take for granted nowadays and this can make tracing family history a problem when families have tried to hide these misdemeaners in an historical fog(?)
