Subject: Sarah SLOEMAN/SLOOMAN (possibly nee BATT). From: Judith

message - 20/11/2002 - I am trying to find out whether Sarah Batt (Born abt 1835 in High Bickington) married a SLOEMAN or SLOOMAN. If she is the right Sarah, I know that she went on to marry someone else but have not been able to find her first marriage. The marriage would have been before 1864. I know that the couple lived in Atherington in 1864 when their son was born so I am assuming that the marriage was in High Bickington before this. Can anybody help at all?

Subject: Goodings of High Bickington. From: David Waters

message - 8/12/2002 - Just found the village site, and will continue to investigate it. Enjoyed reading the "chat" in the Family Ties section. Our Goodings seem to be in the village for a couple of hundred years or so...are there any left in the village? My direct ancestor was Mary Jane Gooding baptised in the village in Jan 1832. Her father Robert was listed as an innkeeper at that time. The IGI has helped us back 4 generations from her to Leonard Gooding born 1700. He married Anne Goodman in High Bickington in 1719.

Back to Mary Anne...she married John Clements in Barnstaple in 1857.

We visited the village this summer and enjoyed a sunny afternoon walking around, and researching the gravestones in the churchyard. The children weren't so happy!!!

Have now found that you have the gravestones indexed...so will cross reference. If we had found your site before, we may not have visited, and would have missed the feeling of belonging to the village...so am very pleased we came.

Subject: Goodings of High Bickington. From: Margaret Tyler

message 20/01/2004 - Hello David, my name is Margaret Tyler and my Great Grandfather was John Gooding. I only found this site today and its nice to know that Gooding's were still being born in 1936. John Gooding married Sarah Stone from Chittlehampton, don't know when but they were in Cardiff in 1901. Their son Albert was born in 1900 my Maternal Grandfather, John and Albert were Stone Masons. That's all I know for the time being, also it is a wonderful site.

I, too, am a descendant of Leonard Gooding and Ann - but I have the surname as Woodman, not Goodman.
You can contact me directly at rich@wwwireless.com, cousin.

Subject: Morrish Family of High Bickington. From: Jennifer Osborne

message - 14/02/2003 - Dear Webmaster
I would like to post a message on this board and my 3x great grandfather was William Henry Morrish. Several members of my family lived in the village and Nether Grove Lodge and I would like to find out any further information. Is this page still alive and kicking?

Subject: Morrish Family of High Bickington. From: Webmaster

Jennifer, you may be interested to know that the Morrish family are still alive and kicking in the High Bickington area! Don't know if it's the same family but there are Morrish's farming at Sherwood Green a couple of miles to the West of the village.

Subject: Andrew Family of High Bickington. From: Colin Andrew

message - 19/05/2003 - As a result of researching my family history I have been led to High Bickington by my GGG-grandparents. My question is about trying to find a reason why they left the tranquil life of a beautiful N. Devon farming community for the dirt and bustle of industrial Swansea. They left HB in about 1830. Does anyone know of any particular event or general hardships that might have existed in the vilage at that time? The following are details of my family there. They were John Andrew(s) and Ann Andrew nee Down. Ann Down was born in 1799 to Thomas and Joan Down but so far I have not had any further leads on John himself. They were married there in 1821 and my GG-grandfather James was also born there in 1828. John Andrew was a maltster and he may have had a brother or cousin George Andrew, also a maltster in HB at the same time.
