It was in High Bickington, a Devon parish that Robert Payne was born. His father John was born in about 1769. He married
Elizabeth Woolacott on December 26th 1804. It was a convenient date for a wedding because it was a holiday from work.
Although they got married in Burrington Church they were living in High Bickington Parish when their first child William
was born and baptised in the church on April 28th 1805. Francis, their second son was baptised on July 17th 1808. Elizabeth
was baptised on June 28th 1812 and Robert on December 25th 1815. The church record of Robert’s baptism shows the family
were living at Seckington, a hamlet to the west of High Bickington village and his father John was a husbandman.
